Red Eléctrica de España’s Manager of the Aragon Regional Office, José Ignacio Lallana, and the Mayor of Mequinenza (Zaragoza), Magdalena Godia, have signed an agreement under which the company will provide EUR 60,000 to fund a new ornithological observatory and major improvements to the habitat of the Special Protection Area for birds (SPA) in Aiguabarreig. These activities, aimed at boosting the area’s already existing ornithological tourism, will be undertaken outside of breeding season. Plans also include the posting of signs along the observatory access road, the installation of informative panels, and the creation of other materials for circulation, such as a guide to the SPA’s bird population, of which 1,000 copies will be published.
Located in the centre of the Middle Ebro Basin, the Aiguabarreig SPA occupies more than 38,000 hectares between Aragon and Catalonia and forms one of the Iberian Peninsula’s largest river confluences in the municipality of Mequinenza, where various, extensive habitats are found. The size of this vast wetland and the surrounding aridity make it a strategic point for many rare and threatened bird species that settle in the area to spend the winter, reproduce, or simply rest during migration.
