The ‘Birds and power lines. Mapping of bird flight paths’, which Red Eléctrica de España presented to the Good Practice Competition 2015 of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), has received the ‘Highly Commended’ certificate of recognition.

The European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) is a non-profit organisation based in Brussels, founded in 1988 by the presidents of fourteen major European companies, with the support of the European Commission. It plays its key role in increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of European organisations, strengthening excellence and quality in all aspects of their activities seeking to increase business competitiveness. The foundation annually holds a good practice competition among European companies following the EFQM Excellence Model. The theme of the 2015 competition is ‘Achieving Sustainable Excellence’.

Red Eléctrica de España’s project ‘Birds and power lines. Mapping of bird flight paths’, which has been considered as a ‘Highly Commended’ good practice by the EFQM, arose in the context of studying and finding solutions to problems resulting from interactions between birds and power transmission lines. It facilitates decision-making in the planning and implementation stages of electricity infrastructure nationwide and the management of the existing grid by incorporating the protection of birds as an important consideration in all stages in order to minimise the impact of new power lines on birds and prioritise corrective actions on existing lines.

The project was already awarded the European Environment Award for Business 2014 in the special category ‘Business and Biodiversity’. The European Environment Awards, organised by the Directorate General for the Environment of the European Commission, are awarded to companies that successfully combine innovation, competitiveness and outstanding environmental performance.

Since 1999, Red Eléctrica de España has undertaken its activities with a focus on excellence in management by implementing the European EFQM model. In 2003, Red Eléctrica obtained the European Seal of Excellence EFQM 500+, awarded by the Club Excelencia en Gestión, EFQM’s National Partner in Spain, maintaining its validity in subsequent years by means of biennial assessments.
