The Secretary General of Sport for Galicia’s regional government, Marta Míguez; the mayor of Dumbría, José Manuel Pequeño; the mayor of Muxía, Félix Porto; and Red Eléctrica’s Manager of Western Regional Office, Carlos González, performed the traditional “cutting of the ribbon” ceremony to kick-off this spectacular event, which Red Eléctrica de España has sponsored for the past three years.

This year’s edition, won by five-time triathlon world champion, Javier Gómez Noya, also included participation from Swiss former cyclists Alex Zulle and Tony Rominger (stars of the sport in the 1980s), in addition to other cycling greats, like Álvaro Pino, Óscar Pereiro, Ángel Casero, and Ezequiel Mosquera.

The more than 1,000 participants scaled inclines of up to 30% to reach the Ézaro scenic overlook along a concrete path, which made the climb even more difficult and caused many participants to dismount in order to reach the top.

The Gran Fondo de Ézaro has established itself as one of the year’s most anticipated cycling events because of its difficulty, the high number of participants, and the spectacular setting in which it takes place.
