The Deputy Minister of the Environment for the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha, Agapito Portillo; the General Manager of Transmission Division for Red Eléctrica de España, Eva Pagán; and the Managing Director of the Fundación Pau Costa, Oriol Vilalta, presented the II International Wildfire Awards at the IV Conference on Wildfires, which took place on 13 and 14 November at the Escuela de Administración Regional in Toledo.
The awards aim to promote research and innovation, and encourage the study and development of the knowledge, techniques and tools necessary to manage and combat wildfires. Two research projects were awarded: “Analysis, meteorology, and simulation of large forest fires,” as best work in the category of master’s or doctoral thesis, and “DRON3: Surveillance Towers,” in the category of end-of-degree, baccalaureate or professional training research projects. Also recognised were all of the individuals, organisations, and entities that helped extinguish the fire in Yeste, Molinicos and Riópar (Albacete).
The international conference, organised by the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha and the Fundación Pau Costa, was sponsored by Red Eléctrica, as part of the collaboration agreement between the Regional Government and the company to prevent and combat wildfires. This year’s conference, which focused on the human factor in the management of wildfires, brought together more than 300 professional experts from 12 autonomous communities and emergency agencies in Portugal and France, as well as members of the General Administration of State, the Military Emergencies Unit, companies in the sector, and university students from several centres in Castilla-La Mancha, Cantabria and Córdoba. The event was also streamed live to a larger audience.
Participating as speakers at the two-day event on behalf of Red Eléctrica were Ignacio Fernández, Manager of the Central Regional office; Manuel López Cormenzana, Manager of Facilities Maintenance Area; and Mario Castro, Manager of Red Eléctrica’s Centre Demarcation.
