Juan Carlos Suárez-Quiñones, Minister for Development and the Environment of the Regional Government of Castilla y Leon and Chairman of the Board of the Natural Heritage Foundation of Castilla y Leon; Eva Pagán, General Manager of Transmission Division at Red Eléctrica de España; and Ana Cuevas, the company's Corporate Director of Sustainability, Innovation and Institucional Coordination, have today signed a cooperation Agreement on fighting forest fires in the El Bierzo region (Leon).
Under this Agreement, Red Eléctrica will provide 200,000 euros for the development of a network of monitoring systems and improvements in communications to enable faster detection, cooperation and response to possible fires in the El Bierzo region of Leon.
This system will provide detailed knowledge of the perimeter of the fire and its behaviour, which will improve the safety of both the people and infrastructure affected, including power lines owned by Red Eléctrica de España.
An information campaign will also be carried out to encourage respect and awareness among the general public for conservation and improving the natural environment.
The Agreement is part of a general action protocol aimed at establishing a model of cooperation between the two institutions on biodiversity and the sustainable development of the energy model, especially in areas where Red Eléctrica has infrastructure.
