From 22-26 May, the Valencian municipality of Cofrentes hosted the 12th edition of Biodiversity Week, an event sponsored by Red Eléctrica de España for the fifth consecutive year under an agreement signed with Valencia’s regional government, the Generalitat Valenciana.

During the event, more than 100 researchers, naturalists, and technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change, and Rural Development collected samples in Cofrentes in an effort to expand the data records on flora and fauna, and update the available information to enrich Valencia’s Biodiversity Databank (Banco de Datos de Biodiversidad de la Comunidad Valenciana, “BDBCV”).

Field surveys were also conducted of the flora and fauna in river environments; nest-boxes for bats were installed; and vegetation native to the wooded riverside was planted in the recreational area of Cabriel, in addition to other activities.

Red Eléctrica’s regional delegate in the Community of Valencia, Maite Vela; the mayor of Cofrentes, Salvador Honrrubia; the director general of the Generalitat Valenciana’s Natural Environment and Environmental Assessment unit, Antoni Marzo; and the head of Forest Fire Prevention, Delia Álvarez, attended the closing ceremony, where they delivered a positive assessment of the data collected over the course of the 4-day event.
